The short answer

What is dispensary SEO?

Dispensary SEO is the work that gets a licensed cannabis store found in Google's map pack, in organic results and on searches for its own menu items. It covers your Google Business Profile, your website and menu, listings such as Weedmaps and Leafly, customer reviews and local links, all inside Google's rules and your state's advertising rules.

How dispensary SEO differs from regular local SEO

A coffee shop can run Google Ads, embed its menu as a PDF and never think about an age gate. You can't.

  • Ads are closed

    • Google Ads Closed
    • Meta Closed

Google Ads and Meta don't accept ads for THC products, so paid search and paid social are closed to you.

  • Your menu lives on a platform

    • Standard embed Partly indexed

Your menu usually lives on a platform such as Dutchie or Jane, and the standard embed is only partly indexed.

  • Every page has an age gate

    • Googlebot Has to get through

Every visitor meets an age gate, and a badly built gate can stop Google at the door too.

  • Your state sets the rules

    • Ad rules Set by your state

Your state has its own rules on what you can say, where you can say it and who can see it.

Regular local SEO ignores all four. Dispensary SEO is built around them.

How Google ranks the map pack

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). You can't move your store closer to the searcher. You can make it the most relevant and best-known dispensary in your area, and that's where our work goes.

Who it's for

Who dispensary SEO is for

  • Single-store dispensaries

One license and one Business Profile that has to win the neighborhood on its own.

  • Multi-location groups and MSOs

Stores across cities or states that need their own pages and profiles without competing with each other.

  • Delivery services

Google doesn't allow a Business Profile without a storefront customers visit, so we build your website and your Weedmaps and Leafly listings to win delivery searches.

  • Medical dispensaries

With tighter rules on claims and audience. Run a card or certification clinic? See medical marijuana SEO.

  • New and pre-license stores

Set up before opening day so the profile, pages and listings are live when the doors open. Verification can take a few weeks, so start early.

  • Stores changing menu platform

Moving between Dutchie, Jane, Meadow, Tymber or a native menu without losing rankings, including Dutchie Plus stores moving before the end of 2026.

This isn't the right page if you are

  • A shop that sells only hemp-derived CBD and no THC.

See our service for CBD and hemp shops.

  • A shop selling hemp-derived THC, such as Delta-8 or THCA, without a state cannabis license.

That's a different set of rules, outside this service.

  • A cannabis brand with no store of its own.

Business Profiles are for places that serve customers in person. Talk to us about brand SEO.

  • An unlicensed store.

We check licenses in the audit, and we don't take on stores that fail it.

Why search

Why search matters more for dispensaries than for most stores

Ads are closed to you

Google Ads doesn't allow ads for marijuana or THC products in any US state, under its Dangerous products or services policy (Recreational drugs). Meta doesn't allow them either (Meta advertising standards). Federal law still treats adult-use marijuana as a Schedule I drug, which is why Google and Meta keep cannabis ads closed. What you can sell, and say, is set by your state.

That leaves Google Search and Google Maps as the main way a new customer finds you, and the map pack is where most of them look.

Weedmaps and Leafly rent you customers. Search lets you keep them.

Weedmaps and Leafly are useful, and we keep your listings there accurate. But when a customer searches your store's name and lands on a marketplace page instead of yours, the marketplace owns the relationship, the order data and the upsell. A store that ranks for its own name, its own menu and "dispensary near me" sends those customers to its own site first.

How your customers search

Buyers search by place, by hours and by product. Almost nobody searches for a brand.

SearchUS monthly searches

dispensary los angeles5,700
dispensary open late2,400
dispensary brooklyn2,400

Monthly searches. Source: SE Ranking.

"Open now" and "open late" are worth a second look. Those searches convert within the hour, and they're won or lost on whether your hours are right on your profile.

Your state's advertising rules apply to your website too

State rules on cannabis marketing don't stop at billboards. They can cover your age gate, product descriptions, health claims, anything that might appeal to minors, and required warnings.

In California and Colorado, for example, ads can only run where at least 71.6% of the audience is reasonably expected to be 21 or older, and California and New York require your license number on advertising.

We check your pages, posts and product descriptions against your state's rules before anything goes live. We aren't lawyers, so your compliance officer or counsel signs off on anything close to the line.

  • A map scan from 49 points around your store for your top 3 searches.
  • A menu check: how many of your product pages Google has indexed, and what's holding back the rest.
  • An age gate and crawl check.
  • A Business Profile check for the most common suspension risks.
  • The listings where your name, address, phone or hours don't match, across Google, Apple, Bing, Weedmaps and Leafly.

What's included

What's included in dispensary SEO

These are the ten areas we work on for each store. Local links and press start on the Multi-store plan.

  1. Google Business Profile setup and protection

We set up or rebuild your profile so it's complete, accurate and inside Google's rules, then keep it that way. THC products, prices and deals stay out of your profile's products and posts, because Google doesn't allow them there; your menu and deals live on your website. If the profile is suspended, we find the cause and file the reinstatement request.

Business Profile checklist · Your store

    Checklist
    • Primary category: Cannabis store (there's no "dispensary" category)
    • Name exactly as on your sign and license
    • Storefront address that matches your license
    • Hours, holiday hours and "open now" accuracy
    • No THC products, prices or deals in products or posts
    • Real photos: storefront, inside, staff, no product close-ups that break state rules
    • Weekly posts checked against state rules
    • Edits from Google and the public monitored
  2. Age gates that don't block Google

Your age gate has to stop a 17-year-old. It doesn't have to stop Googlebot. Google recommends letting verified Googlebot crawl past a mandatory age gate, and showing the gate on top of content that has already loaded (Google's guidance). We build the gate that way. A gate that redirects every visitor can hide your whole site from search, and we never remove or weaken a gate your state requires.

  3. Weedmaps, Leafly and listings beyond Google

We set up and manage your Weedmaps and Leafly listings (the platform subscriptions are yours), clean up Apple Maps (through Apple Business) and Bing Places where they accept your listing, and keep you right on the state regulator's licensed-store list, where your state publishes one.

These are listings, and we treat them as listings, not "authority backlinks". Your customers care whether the hours are right.

  4. Store, neighborhood and category pages

One page for each store, with the address, hours, pickup and delivery area, your license number where your state requires it, and a link to your menu. Pages for the neighborhoods you really serve, never copied with the place name swapped. And category pages, such as edibles or pre-rolls by city, for product searches.

  5. Multi-location and MSO setup

Each store gets its own profile, store page, menu route and LocalBusiness schema linked to the parent company, and none of them competes with the others. Each store's content is checked against its own state's rules, because Michigan's aren't New Jersey's. The MSO plan adds a written rulebook for each state.

  6. Reviews, the right way

We ask every customer, on Google, Weedmaps and Leafly, by text, email or a QR code at the register. We never filter out unhappy customers or offer a discount or gift for a review. Both break Google's review policy, and rewards tied to positive reviews break the FTC's review rule. Nobody on your team reviews your own listing, which Weedmaps and Leafly forbid, and in California review texts go only to customers who've confirmed they're 21 or older. We reply to every review within 2 business days.

  7. Local links and press

Store openings, community events, budtender education and local news, within your state's rules. For publisher links, see editorial link building. For "best dispensaries in [city]" articles, see local "best of" lists.

  8. AI and voice answers for "dispensary near me" and "open now"

AI assistants such as ChatGPT search and Siri answer questions like "which dispensary near me is open now" from your profile, listings, reviews and website. We keep those consistent and check monthly what they say about your store. For national AI visibility, see AI search visibility.

  9. Weekly 49-point map scan and online order tracking

A normal rank tracker checks one spot. Every week we check your map position from 49 points in a 7 × 7 grid around your store, for each tracked search, and show which competitor wins each area. We also track menu views and online orders through GA4, where your platform supports it (Dutchie and Jane do).

Compliance across everything we publish

Every post, page, product description and review reply is checked against your state's rules before it goes live. We never write that a product treats, helps or is "for" anything: no "indica for sleep", no "for anxiety", no "for pain". A careful review, not legal advice.

  • Your state's advertising rules
  • Claims and warnings on product pages
  • Nothing that appeals to minors

Our rules

What we won't do, even if a competitor does

Some tactics get quick results and then get a profile suspended or a license questioned. We don't use them:

  • Fake or paid reviews.
  • Review requests sent only to happy customers.
  • Keywords added to your business name.
  • Virtual offices or extra addresses to appear in more towns.
  • Effect or medical claims anywhere in your copy.
  • Copied city pages with only the place name changed.
  • Thousands of auto-generated pages.
  • Q&A "seeding" or geotagged photos. Google retired Business Profile Q&A in 2025, and it has never said it uses photo location data for ranking.
  • Ads or posts that break your state's advertising rules.
  • A promise of the #1 spot. Nobody controls that, and anyone who promises it is guessing.

Timeline

How long dispensary SEO takes

  1. Weeks 1–4

Profile fixes and listing clean-up show first, usually as more calls, direction requests and "open now" visits.

  2. Months 1–3

Menu pages get indexed and start ranking for product and category searches.

  3. Months 2–4

Rankings improve near your store for searches with fewer competitors, such as "dispensary [neighborhood]" or "edibles [city]".

  4. Months 3–6

"Dispensary near me" improves across more of the grid.

  5. Months 6–12

In dense markets such as Los Angeles, Denver or Brooklyn, holding the top 3 across a wide area usually takes this long.

Suspended profiles start this timeline from the day the profile is reinstated.

Six questions to ask any dispensary SEO agency

Ask any agency these, including us:

  • How will you get my menu indexed?

If the answer is "we'll add keywords to the page around it", walk away.

  • How does my age gate affect crawling, and what will you change?

They should know the difference between an overlay and a redirect.

  • How do you handle Weedmaps and Leafly?

Listings to keep accurate, or "backlinks"?

  • Which state rules do you check before publishing, and who signs off?

  • How do you stop my stores competing with each other in search?

  • What happens if results don't come?

Guarantee and pricing

The 90-day guarantee and pricing

The 90-day map pack guarantee

If your store isn't in the top 3 of the Google map pack for at least one agreed priority search, measured from your store's address, within 90 days of your profile being live and verified, we work the next month free.

What it covers

  • One agreed search per store, chosen together in week 1 and measured from that store's address.
  • The 90 days start when your profile is live and verified, or on the day it's reinstated if it was suspended.

What it doesn't cover

  • Delivery-only services, which Google doesn't allow a Business Profile.
  • Stores without an active state license.
  • The time a profile is suspended. The clock starts again on the day it's reinstated.

The guarantee is written into your contract. Some agencies will tell you any guarantee is a red flag. They're right about guarantees of the #1 spot. This one is narrow, measured from one address, and in writing.

FAQ

Questions dispensary owners ask

Still have a question?

Ask Khushboo →
What is dispensary SEO?

Dispensary SEO is the work that gets a licensed cannabis store found in Google's map pack, in organic results and on searches for its own menu items. It covers your Google Business Profile, your website and menu, listings such as Weedmaps and Leafly, customer reviews and local links, all inside Google's rules and your state's advertising rules.

How is dispensary SEO different from regular local SEO?

Paid ads are closed to you, your menu sits in an embed Google only partly indexes, every visitor meets an age gate, and your state has its own advertising rules. Regular local SEO deals with none of these.

Can a dispensary have a Google Business Profile, and which category should it use?

Yes, if it's licensed and has a storefront where it serves customers. Use the Cannabis store category (there's no "dispensary" category), keep the name exactly as on your sign and license, and keep THC products, prices and deals out of the profile. Common causes of suspension are a wrong category, keywords in the name or an address that doesn't match the license.

Why isn't my Dutchie or Jane menu showing in Google?

Usually one of these: the standard embed is only partly indexed, the platform's SEO setting is off, the menu sitemap isn't in your robots.txt, an age gate or canonical tag blocks it, or a subdomain menu counts as a separate site. The audit tells you which, and your platform's route to pages on your own domain.

We're on Dutchie Plus. What happens at the end of 2026?

Dutchie supports Dutchie Plus through the end of 2026. We plan the move to Dutchie E-Commerce Pro on a sub-path or another platform, map every old URL to its new one and watch your rankings through the switch.

Will an age gate hurt my SEO?

Only if it's built as a redirect or a blocking screen. Google recommends letting verified Googlebot crawl past a mandatory age gate, and showing the gate on top of content that has already loaded. We rebuild gates that block crawling.

Do Weedmaps and Leafly help my Google rankings?

They help your customers, and they help Google confirm your name, address and hours. We keep both accurate, but we don't count them as authority links.

Can you work with multi-location groups and MSOs?

Yes. Each store gets its own profile, store page, menu route and schema, so the stores don't compete. The MSO plan adds a dedicated strategist, a written rulebook for each state and a rollout plan for new stores.

Can a delivery-only service rank in the map pack?

No. Google doesn't allow businesses selling age-restricted products, cannabis included, to have a Business Profile without a storefront. We build your website and your Weedmaps and Leafly listings to win delivery searches instead.

How long does dispensary SEO take?

Profile fixes show in the first 4 weeks. Menu pages get indexed and start ranking in months 1 to 3. "Dispensary near me" improves across the grid in 3 to 6 months, and dense markets can take 6 to 12.

How much does dispensary SEO cost?

$1,800 a month for a single store, $1,500 per store a month for 2 to 10 stores, and from $1,200 per store a month for 11 or more. No setup fee, and 10% off for annual payment. Menu indexing is in every plan. Custom headless menu builds and platform fees are quoted separately.

How do you get more reviews without breaking the rules?

Ask every customer on Google, Weedmaps and Leafly, never filter out unhappy ones, never offer a reward and never review your own listing. Gating and rewards break Google's review policy, and rewards tied to positive reviews break the FTC's review rule.

Is this different from local SEO for hemp shops?

Yes. Licensed dispensaries sell marijuana under a state license, with the Cannabis store category, menu platforms and state cannabis ad rules. CBD and hemp shops sell hemp-derived products under different rules, so we run them as a separate service.

Do I need a long contract, and what do you need from us?

No. We ask for 90 days, the length of the guarantee. If your store isn't in the top 3 of the Google map pack for at least one agreed priority search, measured from your store's address, within 90 days of your profile being live and verified, we work the next month free. After that, pause or cancel each store with 30 days' notice. We need profile, website and menu platform access, store photos and your license details.
