The short answer
CBD AI SEO is the work of getting a CBD, hemp or cannabis brand named and linked inside AI answers, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, when buyers ask what to buy. AI SEO, also called GEO or AEO, builds on normal search: crawlable pages, clear answers and mentions on sites the engines trust.
For a CBD brand, that means appearing when a buyer asks ChatGPT "what's the best broad-spectrum CBD oil?". For cannabis AI SEO the job is the same: be the brand the answer names.
It isn't a replacement for SEO. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in normal search results (Google Search Central). Perplexity and ChatGPT search also pull live pages from the web. So AI visibility rests on the same foundations as rankings, which we cover separately as traditional CBD SEO.
What changes is how buyers see the result. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 Google searches in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a normal search result 8% of the time, against 15% when there was no summary (Pew Research Center, July 2025). If your brand isn't named inside the answer, fewer people reach your site at all.
Why it matters
Most paid channels are closed or heavily restricted for cannabinoid brands.
Google Ads allows CBD ads only for topical, hemp-derived products with 0.3% THC or less, such as creams, lotions and roll-ons. The advertiser needs LegitScript certification and Google's own CBD certification, and Google limits these ads to California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. Oils, gummies and other ingestibles are not on Google's allowed list.
Meta allows CBD ads only in the United States, with active LegitScript certification and written approval from Meta. The ads can't target anyone under 18, the product must contain 0.3% THC or less, and health claims aren't allowed.
Both platforms ban THC products. That leaves organic search and AI answers as the main way most CBD brands reach new buyers.
Health-related topics get stricter quality checks. A brand that looks risky, with disease claims, no lab results or no clear business details, is less likely to be quoted.
How citations work
AI answers are built from pages the engine can find and trust when the question is asked. From the prompts we track, these six signals most often decide which brands get named.
If an age gate, a CDN bot challenge or robots.txt blocks crawlers, your pages can't be cited. The same goes for a product menu hidden inside an iframe.
Engines quote short, self-contained passages. A question as a heading, followed by a direct two- or three-sentence answer, is easier to cite than a long sales paragraph.
Trade press, review sites, Reddit threads, Leafly and Weedmaps listings, and "best of" articles are where AI answers often find brand names.
The same name, address, licence details and product facts across your site, your Google Business Profile and your listings.
Lab results (COAs), licence numbers, real reviews, named experts and original data.
Pages that already rank well are more likely to be used as sources. That's why the crawl, content and link work comes first.
The same prompt can name different brands from one day to the next. So we don't report a single "position". We report trends across many prompts and repeated checks.

Structured data tells an engine who you are, what you sell and which facts can be checked. We connect your brand to the things it is known for, so each engine sees one consistent business.
Who it's for
Each type of business gets asked about differently, so the prompt set and the work change with it.
Product pages, COAs, buying guides and claim-safe content for prompts like "best CBD gummies" or "which CBD oil is third-party tested?".
Google Business Profile and map visibility for "dispensary near me" prompts, menus that search engines can read, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. See dispensary SEO.
Location pages, consistent business details across every store, and reporting per location.
Fewer publishers and platforms accept these products, and some AI tools answer cautiously. We focus on cannabis-native sources and on rules that change by state.
What you get
CBD AI SEO is its own retainer. These are the five areas of work. Plans differ in volume, and entity work and topic hubs start on AI Growth.
A list of the questions your buyers ask AI tools, across informational, comparison and buying prompts. We check where you're named today, which competitors are named instead, and which sources each engine cites for your category.
Robots.txt, CDN and firewall settings that let verified crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot through. Age gates that let verified crawlers in. Menus from Dutchie, Jane and similar platforms on your own domain, not in an iframe. An optional llms.txt file, which is a small extra, not a ranking factor. For a full technical audit, see CBD technical SEO.
Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage and Review schema where each one is accurate. Consistent business details across your site, Google Business Profile, Leafly, Weedmaps and other listings. A Wikidata entry and sameAs links where the brand meets Wikidata's notability rules (AI Growth and above).
Question-led pages and FAQs written to be quoted, claim-safe wording, and topic hubs for your category (AI Growth and above). We use AI tools for research and drafts; every page is edited and checked by our team.
AI engines name brands that other trusted sites talk about. We pitch founder commentary and original data to cannabis trade press and lifestyle publishers, and work to get you into relevant "best of" articles. Links from these placements also help your normal rankings.

Measurement
AI traffic is easy to miss. Much of it shows up as "direct" in GA4, and AI answers change from one check to the next. So we measure it from several angles.
| What we track | How | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt set | Up to 250 tracked prompts per brand, chosen with you from informational, comparison and buying questions | Agreed in week 2, reviewed every quarter |
| Citations and mentions | Your prompt set, re-run across each of the 6 engines, with results counted over time | Re-run on a fixed schedule |
| Share of voice | How often you're named compared with each competitor, across the same prompts | Monthly |
| AI referral traffic | Referrer and landing-page tagging in GA4 for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot visits | Monthly |
| Google AI features | Search Console performance data, alongside the AI Overview checks in your prompt set | Monthly |
| Revenue from AI visits | First-touch and assisted orders from AI referrals | Monthly |
Every client gets a live dashboard with these numbers, plus a monthly summary of what changed and why.
Process
In our experience, specific long-tail prompts can start citing a brand within 4 to 8 weeks of the fixes going live. Broad category prompts usually take 3 to 6 months, depending on the competition. These are estimates, not promises.
Week 1
Prompt map, citation check, crawl access, schema and content gaps. You get a written report and a call to go through it.
Week 2
We agree the prompts, pages and sources to target, and the claim rules for your products. You sign off before work starts.
Weeks 3 to 4
Crawl and indexing fixes, schema, business details across listings, and the first answer-ready pages.
Weeks 5 to 6
Answer-ready pages go live (topic hubs on AI Growth and above) and PR pitches go out. You get the first measured baseline.
Month 2 onwards
New prompts, new content and new placements, with the dashboard updated throughout.
Every quarter
Citations, share of voice, AI referral traffic and revenue against the targets we set in week 2.
Compliance
Content that breaks claim rules is less likely to be cited and can put your business at risk. Every page we write or edit is checked against these rules. Need the pages written? See CBD content writing.
The FDA has not approved CBD as a treatment for anything except one prescription epilepsy drug, Epidiolex. We don't write that a product treats, cures or prevents anything. The FTC requires evidence for any health claim and has taken action against CBD companies that made unsupported ones.
Two examples of wording we change:
COAs linked from product pages, readable by people and crawlers. Age gates that let verified crawlers through, and no content aimed at under-21s. We don't use medical schema types on CBD pages, because marking a product page as relating to a medical condition implies a health claim.
Section 781 of Public Law 119-37, signed in November 2025, moves the federal hemp definition to total THC (THCA counts) and caps finished consumable hemp products at 0.4 mg of total THC per container. The change is scheduled to take effect in late 2026. We flag product pages that could fall outside the new definition before we build visibility for them.
What a dispensary in California can say isn't always what one in Colorado can say. We check content against the state you sell in. For anything a regulator might read, check with your compliance counsel as well.
Not legal advice.

Compare
Same foundations, different goal. Rankings still matter, because AI answers lean on pages that rank. What changes is what you aim for and how you measure it.
| Feature | AI SEO | Traditional SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Your brand named, quoted or linked inside the AI answer | Your pages ranked high in the list of search results |
| Unit of success | A citation or mention for a buyer prompt | A position for a keyword |
| Measurement | Citations, share of voice, AI referral visits and orders | Rankings, organic clicks and conversions |
| Content format | Short, self-contained answers under question headings, with facts a buyer can check | Full pages built around a keyword and its related terms |
| Off-site work | Mentions on sites the engines cite, with or without a link | Links that pass authority to your pages |
CBD AI SEO is the work of getting a CBD or cannabis brand named and linked inside AI answers, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, when buyers ask questions like "which CBD brand is lab-tested?". It builds on normal SEO: your pages need to be crawlable, indexed and clear, and mentions from sources the engines trust do the rest.
Yes. Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible for normal results to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and AI tools that search the web lean on pages that already rank. SEO is still the base. What has changed is that ranking alone no longer guarantees the click, so you also need to be named inside the answer.
They're different names for overlapping work. GEO (generative engine optimization) usually means AI chat tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. AEO (answer engine optimization) covers answer formats such as Google AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice assistants. AI SEO is the broad label for both, and our retainer covers all of it.
Regular CBD SEO aims to rank pages in search results. AI SEO aims to have your brand named inside the AI answer that now sits above or replaces those results. The foundations are the same. The focus shifts to short answer-ready passages, consistent business facts, earned mentions and measuring citations as well as rankings.
Partly. AI tools are useful for research, clustering prompts and first drafts, and we use them that way. They aren't reliable on cannabis claim rules, state law or what your lab results actually say. Every page we publish is edited and checked by our team before it goes live.
No. No one can guarantee a place in an AI answer, because the answers are generated fresh each time and change from one run to the next. What we can show you is the trend: how often you're named across your agreed prompt set, month by month, on every engine we track.
In our experience, specific long-tail prompts can start citing a brand within 4 to 8 weeks of the fixes going live. Broad category prompts usually take 3 to 6 months, depending on the competition. After the audit we tell you which prompts are realistic for your site and which aren't.
We track 6: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. We re-run your prompt set on a fixed schedule and count citations over time, compare how often you're named against competitors, tag AI referrals in GA4 and use Search Console data for Google's AI features. It all appears in your dashboard.
Yes, all of them. We work with CBD and hemp brands, dispensaries, multi-location operators and hemp THC brands. For dispensaries we focus on Google Business Profile, local prompts, reviews and menu indexing. For THC products we focus on cannabis-native publishers and state rules, because fewer mainstream platforms accept them.
Every page is checked before it's published: no disease claims, evidence for any health-related statement, COAs linked from product pages and wording that matches the state you sell in. We don't use medical schema on CBD pages, and we flag products the 2026 federal hemp change could affect. We aren't lawyers, so check regulated copy with your counsel.
Our CBD AI SEO plans are published: AI Starter is $3,000 a month (50 tracked prompts), AI Growth is $5,500 (100 prompts) and AI Authority is $10,000 (250 prompts). Pay annually and you save 10%. AI SEO is its own retainer, so you can start it without any other service. The free audit comes first, with a written reply within 24 hours.
Access to Search Console, GA4 and your site or CMS, your product data and COAs, and someone who can approve content and claims. For dispensaries we also need access to your Google Business Profile and menu platform. We agree the prompt set with you in week 2, before any content work starts.
