Why SEO

Why clinics and card services need medical marijuana SEO

Medical marijuana SEO is the work that gets certification clinics, telehealth card services and UK medical cannabis clinics found in Google and named in AI answers when patients look for an evaluation, a renewal or a clinic. We measure it in booked appointments, not visits.

  • Paid search is mostly closed

    • Google Ads No marijuana ads
    • Meta No THC product ads

Google doesn't allow marijuana ads in the US, medical or not, and Meta doesn't allow ads for THC products. Most card services can't build on paid search, so organic search carries the load.

  • Patients search by state, cost and renewal

    • "how to get a medical card" 1,900 a month

Patients ask how to get a card in their state, what it costs and when to renew. The pages that rank answer those questions for one state at a time.

  • State sites and dispensaries want the same searches

    • Card searches .gov pages rank

State and county program pages rank for card searches, and dispensary chains publish their own guides to getting a card. Your page has to explain the steps more clearly than either, without promising what you can't.

  • Telehealth-only services get no Business Profile

    • Google Business Profile Offices only

Google lists businesses that meet customers in person during their stated hours. A clinic with real offices can have a profile for each one. A telehealth-only service can't, so its local visibility comes from state pages, reviews on other sites and links.

AI answers now shortlist services

When patients ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews how to get a medical card, the answer can name a few services instead of listing ten pages. Which names make the list changes often.

Is yours on it? AI answers draw on pages that explain your process clearly, and on sites that mention you. Both are work we can do for you, and we track the answers every month.

We're a CBD SEO agency, and medical cannabis businesses hit the same walls our other clients do: closed ad platforms, few publishers willing to link, and Google's higher bar for health topics. The link and content methods carry over; the rules chapter below covers what's different for clinics.

Search demand

The searches medical marijuana SEO can win

Patients search in plain words: "medical card" in the US, "medical cannabis" in the UK. These are measured Google searches in both markets.

Google withholds search figures for most US searches containing "marijuana", so US demand is shown with the generic wording patients also use.

Who it's for

Who medical marijuana SEO is for

  • Certification clinics with offices

Clinics that see patients in person for evaluations and renewals, in one office or several.

  • Telehealth card services

Services that evaluate patients by video in one or more states, where the state allows it.

  • UK private medical cannabis clinics

Private clinics that assess and prescribe, and have to promote the service without promoting the medicine.

If you sell the product, this page isn't for you. Dispensaries are covered on Dispensary SEO, and suppliers and software companies on Cannabis B2B SEO. We don't work with licensed producers or prescription medicine brands.

What we fix

What medical marijuana SEO covers

These are the ten areas we work on. Your audit decides which come first.

  1. State program pages

One page for each state program you serve: who qualifies, the steps, the state's fees, how renewal works, and the conditions your state lists, linked to the state's own page. Each one is written for its state, not copied with the name swapped.

  2. Cost and renewal answers

Patients search for what a card costs and when it runs out. We put your price, the state fee and the renewal steps on the page, and write reminder content that brings patients back when it's time to renew.

  3. Clinician pages

Pages that show your clinicians' real credentials, where your state allows it. In Pennsylvania a doctor may not advertise as one who can certify, so there the pages lead with the service.

  4. Office pages and Business Profiles

A page and a Business Profile for each real office, staffed during its listed hours, with clinic schema that matches the page. No virtual offices or addresses set up just to get a listing.

  5. Reviews that protect patients

A review request flow that follows Google's and the FTC's rules: no fake reviews, no incentives, no filtering out unhappy patients. Replies never confirm that someone is a patient.

  6. Tracking without ad pixels

No ad pixels on booking, eligibility or intake pages. We count bookings from organic search without sending health details to ad platforms, and set up consent where it's needed.

  7. Claims check

No efficacy or condition-outcome claims on any page. Archana Kala, our Head of Content, holds a Diploma in Pharmacy and checks every page we write for health claims. It's an editorial check, not medical review: your medical director approves clinical content.

  8. UK clinic pages

Condition and eligibility pages that promote the service, not the medicine: no product names, strains or prescription offers. Prices in pounds.

  9. Editorial links

Links from health and local news sites, with every domain shared before the link goes live. For more, see editorial link building, digital PR and our local SEO service.

  10. AI answers

When a patient asks ChatGPT search, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews how to get a card, the answer can name a few services. We check what they say about you every month and work on the pages and mentions they draw from. For more, see AI search visibility.

The rules

The rules your search plan works inside

These rules decide which channels you can use and what your pages can say. We plan around them from the first week.

  • Google and Meta ads

Google's Dangerous products or services policy doesn't allow marijuana ads in the US, medical or not. Meta's advertising standards don't allow ads for THC products. Marijuana sold under a state medical license is now in Schedule III federally; that hasn't changed either policy.

  • Google Business Profiles

Google's eligibility guidelines require in-person contact with customers during stated hours, and online-only businesses aren't eligible. Clinics with offices qualify, one profile per office. Telehealth-only services don't.

  • Doctor advertising

Some states limit how certifying doctors can advertise. In Pennsylvania, a practitioner may not advertise their services as a practitioner who can certify a patient to receive medical marijuana (28 Pa. Code § 1181a.31(c)). So we build pages around your service, not your doctors' certification status.

  • UK medicines advertising

UK law doesn't allow advertising a prescription-only medicine to the public (Human Medicines Regulations 2012, regulation 284), and cannabis-based medicines are prescription-only. Clinics can promote the service, not the medicine: no product names, strains or "prescription cannabis" offers in public pages or ads.

Who decides what your pages say

We aren't lawyers. Your counsel and medical director decide what your pages may say; we make sure patients find the pages that say it.

Our rules

What we won't do, even if a competitor does

Some tactics bring quick traffic and then a penalty, a complaint or a privacy problem. We don't use them:

  • Health, efficacy or condition-outcome claims, on any page we write.
  • Copy that promises a fast card or certain approval.
  • Ad pixels on booking, eligibility or intake pages.
  • Fake reviews, review gating, or replies that reveal someone is a patient.
  • Hundreds of cloned city or state pages.
  • Product names or strains on a UK clinic's public pages.
  • Links from private blog networks.
  • A promise of patients or the #1 spot. Nobody controls either.

What is medical marijuana SEO?

Medical marijuana SEO is the work that gets certification clinics, telehealth card services and UK medical cannabis clinics found in Google and named in AI answers when patients look for an evaluation, a renewal or a clinic. We measure it in booked appointments, not visits.

How much does medical marijuana SEO cost?

A clinic with one office is $1,800 a month. Clinics with 2 to 10 offices pay $1,400 per office a month, and from $1,100 per office for 11 or more. Telehealth card services start at $2,500 a month. No setup fee, and 10% off for annual payment. UK clinics are invoiced in pounds.

Do you work with telehealth card services as well as clinics with offices?

Yes, both, and with services that run offices and telehealth together. Telehealth services get a page for every state program they serve; clinics with offices also get an office page and a Business Profile for each office.

Can a telehealth-only service get a Google Business Profile?

No. Google's rules require in-person contact with customers during stated hours, and online-only businesses aren't eligible. A telehealth-only service builds local visibility through state pages, reviews on other sites and links instead.

Can we run Google or Meta ads instead?

Google doesn't allow marijuana ads in the US, medical or not, and Meta doesn't allow ads for THC products. We don't sell ad workarounds. Organic search doesn't need an ad account, so the pages you build keep bringing in patients whatever happens to your ads.

Do you put tracking pixels on our booking pages?

No. We keep ad pixels off booking, eligibility and intake pages, and count bookings from organic search without sending health details to ad platforms. Whether HIPAA covers your business is a question for your counsel. Either way, the FTC has taken action against health companies that sent health data to ad platforms.

Do you work with UK medical cannabis clinics?

Yes. UK clinics can promote their service but not the medicine, so we write condition and eligibility pages with no product names, strains or prescription offers. Prices are in US dollars, and UK clinics are invoiced in pounds at the equivalent rate on the invoice date.

Do you write about qualifying conditions?

We list the conditions your state lists, link the state's own list, and stop there. We don't write about what cannabis treats or how well it works. Your medical director approves anything clinical.

Do you guarantee medical marijuana SEO rankings or patients?

No. Nobody controls Google or the AI answers built on it. We commit in writing to the work we control: no ad pixels added to booking or intake pages, every page checked for health claims before it goes live, every link domain shared before it goes live, and evaluation bookings tracked from month 1.

Do I need a long contract?

Office plans start with 90 days, then run month-to-month with 30 days' notice. The telehealth plan is month-to-month from the start, with 30 days' notice. If you leave, we hand over every asset.
