The engagement at a glance.
Invisible in the hardest vertical to grow online.
Cannabis retail is one of the hardest verticals to grow online. Google Ads, Meta, and most major ad networks prohibit or heavily restrict cannabis advertising, which removes paid acquisition almost entirely and makes organic search the primary scalable growth channel. At the same time, cannabis SERPs are dominated by high-authority marketplaces and directories, so a young retail site with a weak link profile has little chance of ranking for commercial terms.
When the campaign began, the client was effectively invisible in search: roughly 1,000 monthly organic visits, an estimated traffic value of just $28 per month, no meaningful referring domains, and no keywords ranking in Google’s top 50. The mandate was clear — build the site’s authority to a level where it could compete for high-value commercial and transactional cannabis retail keywords, within a defined budget of $80,000.
5,000 quality-controlled links over 26 months.
The core of the engagement was a sustained, quality-controlled link building program: 5,000 backlinks acquired over 26 months, exclusively from websites in the DR 30 to DR 80 range. Every placement had to pass editorial standards — real organic traffic on the linking domain, topical relevance, and natural in-content placement. No PBNs, no link farms, no sitewide footers.
- ◆Strict quality windowEvery linking site was vetted for a Domain Rating between 30 and 80, with genuine organic traffic and clean outbound link profiles.
- ◆Consistent velocityAn average of roughly 190–200 links per month, ramped gradually to keep growth patterns natural and algorithm-safe.
- ◆Money-page focusLinks pointed at commercial category pages, product pages, and supporting content, weighted toward pages already showing ranking potential.
- ◆Anchor disciplineBranded and naked-URL anchors dominated early, shifting to partial-match commercial anchors as authority grew.
- ◆Diversified tacticsGuest posts, niche edits, and digital-PR placements across lifestyle, health, retail, and regional publications that could safely reference cannabis retail.
Four phases, run in sequence.
Foundation
Link gap analysis vs. ranking competitors; foundational links from DR 30–50 niche-relevant sites; branded and URL anchors to build a natural profile.
Acceleration
Scaled outreach to DR 40–70 publications; guest posts and niche edits targeting commercial category and product pages; partial-match anchors.
Authority
High-authority placements (DR 60–80); digital PR-style linkable assets; deepened topical relevance around retail and local intent.
Consolidation
Reinforced pages sitting in positions 4–20 to push them into the top 3; refreshed anchors; recovered and redirected lost link equity.
Links and rankings compounded together.
The 5,000 built links, together with the natural links they attracted, grew the referring domain count from zero to 6,873 unique domains — deliberately steady rather than spiky. By June 2024 the site ranked for 53,716 keywords, including 1,785 in positions 1–3 and 3,361 in positions 4–10 — more than 5,100 keywords on page one.

Traffic that sells: commercial & transactional intent
Crucially, the growth was not informational fluff. By June 2024, Ahrefs classified 122,929 monthly visits as commercial intent and 78,925 as transactional intent — visitors actively comparing and buying cannabis retail products. This is the traffic mix that converts into revenue.

A durable asset, not a rented audience.
The full 26-month program averaged about $3,075 per month. At exit, the site generated organic traffic worth $41,732 every month in equivalent paid-search spend — the traffic value produced in under two months exceeds the entire campaign cost. Unlike paid media, this asset does not reset to zero when spending stops.
What this campaign proves.
Links win restricted niches
In a vertical where paid ads are prohibited, authoritative links were the single highest-leverage growth investment available.
Velocity plus quality
5,000 links across 26 months at a controlled DR 30–80 quality window produced steady, penalty-free growth through multiple algorithm updates.
Intent-first targeting
Targeting commercial and transactional pages meant the traffic gained was buyer traffic, not vanity traffic.
Compounding ROI
$80,000 invested returned a recurring monthly traffic value of $41,732 — equity that keeps paying after the campaign ends.
