Brand Mentions for CBD: Why They Matter for SEO and AI Search in 2026
CBD has a trust problem. In a 2026 survey, 22% of people said they don't trust CBD products, even though 68% of users say CBD works for them (SingleCare).
Now add this: when someone asks ChatGPT or Google "is this CBD brand legit?", the answer comes from sources you don't control. Reviews. Forums. News articles. Other people's blogs.
Those sources are called brand mentions. We run mention campaigns for CBD brands every week, and this guide covers what we've learned: what mentions are, what they do for your SEO and your AI visibility, and how to earn more of them.
What are brand mentions?
A brand mention is any time your brand name appears on a website, app, or platform you don't own. It can be a news article, a "best CBD gummies" roundup, a Reddit comment, a podcast, or a customer review. Some mentions include a link to your site. Many don't. Both kinds shape how people, search engines, and AI tools see your brand.
There are two types worth knowing:
Linked mentions. Your brand name appears and links to your site. You get the mention and a backlink in one. Best case.
Unlinked mentions. Your name appears with no link. Still valuable. Google and AI tools can read your name in the text and connect it to your business. And an unlinked mention is a warm lead for a link, which we'll get to later.
A quick test: search your brand name in quotes on Google, like "your brand name" minus your own site. Everything that comes up is your mention footprint. For most small CBD brands, that footprint is thin. That's the gap this guide helps you close.
Do brand mentions help SEO?
Here's the honest answer. Google has never confirmed brand mentions as a direct ranking factor, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. What Google has said is that its systems try to reward content and sites that show experience, expertise, authority, and trust, a framework called E-E-A-T. Trust is the part that matters most, per Google's own words.
Mentions feed that trust picture in ways we can observe:
They build your entity. Google keeps a map of brands, people, and topics, and how they connect. Every time a cannabis blog writes "CBD SEO Xperts helps hemp brands rank," Google's map links your name to your topic a little tighter.
They corroborate you. Google's quality guidance asks a plain question: if someone researched this site, would they find it's known and trusted for its topic? Mentions on other sites are that evidence. Your own website can't vouch for itself.
They drive branded searches. People see your name on a podcast or in a roundup, then Google it. Branded search demand is a signal that real people care about your brand.
We've watched this play out in our own niche. The #1 site for "cbd seo company" has a Domain Rating of just 7. It outranks agencies rated DR 73 and higher (our Ahrefs data, July 2026). Weak site, strong name-to-topic connection. That's mention gravity at work.
Why brand mentions decide your AI search visibility
This is where mentions stop being a nice-to-have. The data here changed how we run campaigns.
A 2026 study analyzed 23,387 citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI features. It looked at where these tools pull their sources when people ask about specific brands (Omniscient Digital). The split:
- 48% of cited sources are earned media: news sites, reviews, forums, and independent blogs
- 30% are content published by other brands: listicles, comparisons, and roundups
- 23% come from the brand's own website
Only 23%. When AI answers a question about your brand, more than three quarters of its sources sit outside your site.
It gets sharper for trust questions. When people ask "what do customers say about this brand?", earned media takes 82% of citations. The AI quotes Trustpilot, Reddit, and review blogs. It barely looks at you.
One more study worth knowing: pages that include statistics, quotes, and cited sources can raise their visibility in AI answers by up to 40% (GEO study, KDD 2024). AI tools favor sources that look verified. Mentions of your brand inside those sources carry the same trust forward.
We've seen this first-hand. Our own site shows up as a cited source in Google's AI Overview for "cbd seo" (Ahrefs SERP data, July 2026). We didn't submit anything to Google. The mentions and content earned the spot.
The takeaway for CBD brands: your AI reputation is built on other people's websites. You can shape it, but you can't host it.
Why CBD brands need mentions more than anyone
Every brand benefits from mentions. CBD brands depend on them. Three reasons:
Your ads are blocked. Google Ads and Meta restrict CBD promotion. The paid shortcut that other industries lean on is mostly closed to you. Earned coverage is one of the few channels left that scales.
Your buyers are skeptical. Remember that 22% distrust number. CBD shoppers research before they buy, and they trust third parties over brand websites. A mention in a roundup or a positive Reddit thread does what your product page can't.
Forums already rank for your keywords. In our July 2026 SERP analysis, Reddit threads held 2 of the 10 page-one spots for "cannabis seo." Google is placing community voices on page one in this niche. If nobody in those communities knows your brand, you're invisible on results you can never rank for directly.
There's also the FDA layer. The FDA polices health claims in CBD, which makes many publishers nervous about covering CBD brands at all. The pool of willing publishers is smaller, so each mention you earn is worth more, and your competitors have a harder time copying it.
7 ways to earn brand mentions for a CBD brand
These are the tactics we use in client campaigns, ordered by impact.
1. Publish original data
Numbers get quoted. Opinions don't. Run a small survey of CBD users, publish your store's category trends, or analyze public data about the industry. Then pitch the numbers to writers who cover cannabis and wellness.
One data page can earn mentions for years, and each stat that gets quoted usually comes with your brand name attached.
Three study ideas any CBD brand can run this quarter:
- Customer survey. Email your list: why they use CBD, how they pick brands, what they pay per month. Even 150 responses make a quotable study.
- Price tracker. Record the price per mg of the 50 best-selling CBD oils each quarter. Writers covering the industry will quote it every time prices shift.
- Lab report audit. Buy 20 products, check their lab results against label claims, publish what you find. This one earns press because it serves shoppers.
2. Get into "best CBD" listicles
Those roundup posts ranking for "best CBD oil" and "best CBD gummies" are mention machines. They rank, they convert, and AI tools cite them heavily. Third-party listicles make up 30% of AI brand citations, per the Omniscient study.
Finding targets takes one search session. Try these on Google:
- "best cbd" intitle:2026 — fresh roundups being updated now
- "best cbd gummies" -yoursite.com — active lists you're not in
- Your competitor's brand name in quotes — every list they're in and you're not
Then pitch the writer. Offer samples, lab reports, and a clear angle on what makes your product different. This is a core service for us, so we see the acceptance patterns weekly: writers say yes to brands that make their job easy. They skip brands that send a bare "please add us" email. Details at our CBD listicle placement service.
3. Show up on review platforms and forums
The 82% stat makes this non-optional. When AI answers "is this brand good?", it reads Trustpilot, Reddit, and review sites.
Claim your review profiles. The ones that matter in CBD: Trustpilot, Google Business reviews, the review sections of marketplaces that carry you, and cannabis-focused platforms like Leafly if you sell THC-adjacent products. Ask happy customers for reviews in your post-purchase emails. A simple "how did we do?" email two weeks after delivery lifts review volume more than any other change we've tested.
And spend real time in Reddit communities where CBD buyers talk. Answer questions with useful information, not sales pitches. One honest, helpful account beats ten promotional ones that get banned.
4. Answer journalist requests
Reporters post requests for expert quotes every day on HARO (back under new owner Featured.com after its 2024 shutdown), Qwoted, and Source of Sources. Answer requests about wellness, retail, ecommerce, and small business, not just cannabis. A founder quote in a news story is a mention from a domain you could never pitch cold.
Speed wins here. Answer within a few hours, keep it under 150 words, and include your name, title, and brand exactly as you want them printed.
A response format that gets picked: one direct answer to their question in the first sentence, one supporting fact or number, one short example from your business. Reporters copy-paste quotes that need no editing.
5. Guest on podcasts
Cannabis and wellness podcasts need guests every week. Each episode gets you a mention in the show notes, usually with a link, plus your brand name spoken aloud in a transcript that search engines and AI tools index.
Pitch a specific episode idea. "How CBD brands survive without paid ads" gets a yes. "Can I come on your show?" gets ignored.
6. Partner with micro-influencers
You don't need celebrities. Small wellness creators with 5,000 to 50,000 followers write blog posts, film reviews, and get quoted in roundups. Their content becomes part of your mention footprint. Gift products with no strings first. The creators who mention you by choice produce the most natural signals.
7. Sponsor things people write about
Industry awards, local events, advocacy groups, trade associations. Sponsorships come with mentions baked in: event pages, press releases, recap articles. In CBD, association memberships also do double duty as trust signals, since they show you're a real company in a niche full of ghosts.
How to find and reclaim unlinked mentions
Some of your best link opportunities already exist. Sites have mentioned your brand without linking. Here's the process we run monthly for clients:
Step 1: Find them. Set a Google Alert for your brand name and its common misspellings. For a deeper sweep, use Ahrefs Content Explorer: search your brand name, then filter out pages that already link to you. What's left is your unlinked mention list.
Step 2: Sort them. Skip junk sites. Focus on real blogs, news pieces, and roundups with actual traffic.
Step 3: Ask. Send a short, warm email: "Thanks for mentioning us in your piece on X. Would you mind linking our name so readers can find us?" That's the whole ask.
In our campaigns, about 15% of these emails get a yes. Roughly one link for every seven asks, at no cost beyond the time. Across the 35,800+ outreach emails our recent campaigns have sent, mention reclamation stays the cheapest link source we run, at an average placement cost of $125 compared to $150–$600 for cold guest post outreach.
We run this as a monthly motion inside our CBD brand mentions service.
How to track your mentions, including in AI answers
Keep tracking simple at first:
- Google Alerts for your brand name. Free, instant, catches the basics.
- Ahrefs Alerts or Content Explorer for a fuller web sweep, including unlinked mentions.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar (or a similar AI visibility tool) to see how often ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI features mention or cite your brand, and how you compare to competitors.
Check monthly. Watch two numbers: total mentions earned, and your share of AI answers for your category's questions. Both should climb quarter over quarter if your campaigns are working.
Brand mentions vs backlinks: which should you chase?
Both, and here's the split. Backlinks remain the stronger direct ranking signal for Google. Mentions build the trust layer around your brand and dominate what AI tools cite. They're two halves of the same reputation.
| Backlinks | Brand mentions | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Push Google rankings | Build trust and AI visibility |
| Confirmed Google factor | Yes | No |
| Share of AI brand citations | Part of the 23% owned + linked mix | Feed the 48% earned media pool |
| Typical cost in CBD | $125–$600 per placement | Often free (reviews, forums, quotes) |
| Speed | Months to show effect | Mentions appear in AI answers fast |
The practical rule we give clients: never turn down a mention because it has no link, and never stop building links because mentions are easier. When a strong site mentions you without linking, take the mention, then ask for the link. You get two chances to win from one placement.

FAQ
Are brand mentions a Google ranking factor?
Not a confirmed one. Google has never listed mentions as a direct factor. What mentions do is feed signals Google does care about: entity recognition, corroboration from other sites, and branded search demand. Treat them as trust builders, not a ranking switch.
How many mentions does a CBD brand need?
There's no magic number. Progress matters more than totals. A young brand might start with 10 mentions and grow to 50 in six months, and that growth shows up in branded search and AI answers. Track your count monthly and aim for steady gains, not a fixed target.
Do AI tools really read Reddit and review sites?
Yes, heavily. For questions about customer opinions, 82% of AI citations come from earned media like review platforms and forums (Omniscient Digital, 2026). If your brand has no presence there, AI tools have nothing good to say about you, because they have nothing to read.
What's an unlinked mention worth?
Real value, even without the link. It builds your entity in Google's systems, it can be cited by AI tools, and it's a warm lead: about 15% of unlinked mentions convert to links when you ask, based on our campaign data. Find them monthly and ask every time.
