The client & the challenge

A brand-new domain in the most restricted corner of e-commerce.

Exhale Wellness is a Los Angeles-based hemp e-commerce brand selling Delta-8, CBD, THCA, and hemp-derived products — gummies, vapes, pre-rolls, oils, and edibles. It competes in one of the most contested and most restricted corners of e-commerce: hemp SERPs are crowded with established review sites and marketplaces, while Google Ads and every major social platform prohibit the category outright. Organic search wasn’t one channel among several — it was the only scalable acquisition channel available.

In July 2021 the domain started from nothing: zero measurable organic traffic, a Domain Rating of 0, roughly 100 inconsequential referring domains, and not a single keyword in Google’s top 50. Competing brands held DR 60+ profiles built over years. The brief was aggressive — build enough authority, fast enough, for a brand-new domain to rank for high-value commercial hemp keywords within a year, on a defined budget of $50,000.

The strategy

800 hand-vetted links, front-loaded for authority.

The engagement centered on 800 editorial backlinks over 9 months — about 90 per month at roughly $62.50 per placement. Unlike a slow-ramp campaign, the first two months were deliberately front-loaded with authority placements to move DR off zero as fast as possible, because no commercial keyword is winnable at DR 0.

  • Editorial placements only
    Every link was a real editorial article on a site with genuine traffic (207 to 78,300 monthly visits), spanning DR 32 to DR 79.
  • Two-stage anchor strategy
    Branded anchors dominated phase one to establish the brand entity; product anchors (delta 8, hemp gummies, CBD products, THCA) took over as DR crossed 40.
  • Native topic engineering
    A food site got a Salvadoran-cuisine Delta-8 angle, a travel audience got flying-with-CBD-gummies tips, an e-commerce journal got cannabis marketing. Relevance was engineered, never forced.
  • Profile diversity
    Placements spread across lifestyle, health, food, tech, business, and regional news so no single link pattern dominated the profile.
  • Full transparency
    Every link was logged in a shared live tracker with anchor, topic, URL, DR, and site traffic — and verified live before payment.

The results

Authority and links compounded together.

The front-loaded sprint lifted DR from 0 to 35 within the first eight weeks, then steady velocity carried it to DR 50 by April 2022 — authority parity with competitors who had a multi-year head start. The 800 built placements, plus the natural links the ranking content began attracting, grew the profile to 952 referring domains on an editorially plausible curve with no unnatural spikes.

Search impressions: 0 → 1.7 million per month

Search impressions climbed to 1,707,710 per month as the brand saturated its category’s SERPs — the equivalent Google Ads value of this traffic reached $41,060/month, in a niche where Google Ads is not even allowed.

By April 2022 the site held 17,366 top-50 rankings, and the quality of those rankings is the standout: 3,616 keywords sat in positions 1–3, with another 2,933 in positions 4–10. For a domain that was DR 0 nine months earlier, owning 6,500+ page-one rankings in a competitive commercial niche is the direct signature of link authority.

Buyer traffic: 179,922 commercial + 140,799 transactional

The traffic mix skewed overwhelmingly toward purchase intent. By 1 April 2022, Ahrefs classified 179,922 monthly visits as commercial and 140,799 as transactional — shoppers comparing and buying Delta-8, CBD, and hemp products. Alongside 1.7 million monthly search impressions, the brand had become a default presence across its category’s SERPs.
